How Many Attendants do I Need?

If you have been to a few weddings in your life time, chances are that you have noticed that all weddings seem to have a different number of attendants.  How many bridesmaids do you need, and just how many groomsmen should you have?  Do you need a particular number of ushers?

It’s not easy to choose your wedding party, never mind try to hash out the amount of people who you will need to be a part of your wedding party.  The first thing to consider is just how many people you will be having at your wedding.  Most weddings average between 100 and 200 guests, though if you have a larger wedding party then you probably will have a larger wedding party.  Similarly, if you have a smaller wedding party of only 50 people or so, then your wedding party will probably be smaller.

For most weddings that have an average guests list between the 100 and 200 mark, there tend to be any where from 3 to 6 bridesmaids (including the maid of honor).  This number seems to compliments and balance out the number of guests who will be in attendance.  The number of groomsmen tends to reflect the number of bridesmaids, as brides and grooms tend to like having a nice balanced number of people standing at the front of the ceremony with them.

NOTE: It is by no means necessary to have an even ratio of bridesmaids to groomsmen at your wedding.  You can have odd and even numbers, or you can have a 1:2 ratio that can also balance out your wedding party.

The wedding party should not be about numbers; it should be about including the people you love in the planning and the celebrating of your new life as husband and wife.  It would be unlikely that anyone in attendance would be rolling their eyes or be completely horrified that you had an uneven number of bridesmaids to groomsmen as you recited your vows.

One of the most puzzling questions that brides and grooms have when it comes to numbers is just how many ushers they need, as well as the role that the usher plays on the day of the wedding.  An usher’s main goal is to direct people who are attending your ceremony and sometimes the reception to where they need to go.  So that it is manageable, the general rule is that you have 1 usher for every 50 guests who you invite.  If you have a particularly unruly crowd who you know may be a bit more of a handful, then you might want to have one usher for every 25 to 30 guests in attendance during the ceremony.

When it comes to inviting certain people to your wedding party, always be mindful of your budget.  The more people you invite, the more expensive your wedding is going to be.  Though it may be nice to invite your boss, your co-workers, and some odd acquaintances along, keep in mind that this will easily cause you to rack up thousands of extra dollars in expenses.
