Most brides are absolutely astounded by the price tag that they will find on any wedding veil in the stores. $150 for a swatch of cloth? $300 for a swatch of cloth with some gems or glitter? Get out of here! If this sounds like you, and if you have a bit of an artistic side, then you can definitely try to make your own wedding veil. Not only is this a far less expensive method to having a veil, but it is also unique and you can customize the veil to match your dress exactly.
There are also a number of different ways you can go about trying to make your very own wedding veil. We will start with the easiest option first:
1) If you aren’t the craftiest of persons but you want a veil at a good price, then you can try purchasing a veil that has already been cut and gathered up. The only thing that is missing from these veils is the headpiece. You can go out and find your own headpiece from a number of accessory stores, bridal stores, or even craft shops. If you are great with the sewing machine or the thread and needle, you can definitely try to affix the veil yourself. You should have no problems doing so. If you aren’t much of a seamstress, you can always visit a professional seamstress and have her attach the veil to your chosen headpiece.
2) You can talk to your florist about creating a fresh and unique headpiece to compliment your wedding. A beautiful grouping of flowers on a comb or a sort of floral wreath that can go around your head are great selections. Both of these options allow for a veil to be attached to them. You want to be sure that you talk about the price with the florist prior to having this done (there are a lot of different prices out there for seemingly the same thing), but if the price is right and you are having a beautiful outdoor or spring and summer wedding, then this type of headpiece will be special and more economical than what you can find in any store.
3) Try to “recycle” headpieces. Ask your mother, your aunt, your grandmother, your best friend – anyone you can think of – and see if you can borrow their headpiece. This is also a good way of adding a bit of “something old” to your wedding. Though these headpieces usually will be showing the signs of age, you can either go for the antique look or visit a jeweler and see if they will be able to remove any tarnish marks.
The best part about buying the material yourself for the veil is that you can design it to appear any way you want. If you are handy with a sewing machine, you can add ornate and exquisite shapes and designs to your veil. You can add borders, flowers, or any other sort of shapes that will match those that are on your wedding gown.
You can also grab some fabric glue and purchase some Swarovski crystals or pearls. Dab the fabric glue on the gem and then affix it to the veil where you would like it to be. This may be around the edges, you may want to make patterns or shapes, or you may just sparingly have them glued to different areas of the veil. This is a great idea for anyone with a winter wedding as the glint and gleam from the gems will look as if they are snowflakes under the lights in both the wedding and reception hall.
