So you have your dress picked out, your groom says he has his tuxedo rental all sorted out and you have your wedding date all set. One thing you will now have to start thinking about is what color you would like your bridesmaids to wear. Some bride-to-be’s have this color picked out from the day they turned 3 years old, while others tend to pander between different color choices and shades. Having opinionated bridesmaids can only further cloud a bride’s ideas on what color her bridal party should be wearing on her special day. If you have been flip-flopping between color choices, here are some tips to help get you on your way.
Tip #1: Pick a color you like
It’s important that you, as a bride, pick out a color that you actually like! Too many brides become confused and disillusioned after staring at picture after picture of other peoples’ weddings. There are a host of different colors that you will find in any picture in a wedding magazine and online. You may have seen a bridal party wearing mint green dresses in a magazine that looked fantastic… yet you hate mint green… but it looked so great in those pictures… Don’t make the mistake of choosing a color you “think” will look good. Any photographer can make even the worst of colors look fantastic in a picture, though in real life the color choice may be horrendous.
Tip #2: Pick a color that suits the season
A general rule to choosing a color for your bridesmaids’ dresses is that they will suit the season you are being married in. Let’s say you are getting married in the spring or summer. Having a dark, dramatic shade may be a bit overbearing and not suitable for your wedding, but putting your bridesmaids in soft pastel shades and other light colors will be extremely flattering. Likewise, having darker shades during those colder fall and winter months is a good idea, while lighter shades may seem too flimsy and not have a strong enough presence.
Tip #3: Pick a color that suits your theme
If you have a theme already picked out and colors, then an obvious choice would be to use one of these colors for your bridesmaids’ dresses. If they aren’t too fond of turquoise or purple, be open to the idea of them wearing a dress that is within the same shade or color family.
Tip #4: Consider the time of day
The time of day that you are saying “I do” in should be a consideration. Night time weddings can play up the dark and dramatic colors, or even have their bridal party wearing black for a classy, sophisticated look. Daytime bridal parties may want to consider using light colors and shades for their bridesmaid’s dresses.
Tip #5: Jewel tones work well with almost anyone
Rich jewel tones are almost always flattering on any woman, no matter what complexion, hair color or body shape she may have. If you’re ever really stuck and not sure what to choose, go with a rich jewel tone like sapphire blue.
